Registration with a Doctor
It is a condition of residence that all students register with a local general practitioner who will visit them in an emergency. Residents must confirm this by completing the Medical Registration Form (issued on arrival) and returning it to the Bursar’s Office within three weeks of arrival. Failure to register and return the form may result in expulsion from Hall.

Many colleges either operate their own health service or are affiliated to the Central Institutions Health Service. These are all part of the National Health Service (NHS) and many offer extra services such as counselling and psychotherapy, sports injuries clinics and physiotherapy.

First Aid, Illness and Accidents
Residents should normally call their doctor directly. If help is needed, they should contact the Hall staff or Duty Officer who will try to get a First Aider, or assist by calling a doctor or arranging transfer to hospital. If a resident calls for a doctor or an ambulance themselves, they must notify the Bursar’s Office or Duty Officer. Alternatively, residents may report to the nearest Accident and Emergency department which is in University College Hospital (UCH), off Gower Street. This is a very busy hospital and anyone with non-life threatening complaints is liable to be kept in the waiting room for several hours. Residents must endeavour to notify the Duty Officer if they are admitted to hospital.

The Hall does not provide first aid supplies (e.g. sticking plasters or pain killers). Residents are advised to keep their own basic necessities.

Infectious Disease
Residents must authorize their doctor to contact the Bursar’s Office if they are diagnosed with an infectious disease. This information will be confidential to staff essentially involved and, if there is a serious welfare issue, to the college authorities and next-of-kin.

Use of Syringes
If residents use syringes for a prescribed course of medicine they must discuss safe disposal with a member of the Bursar’s Office. Under no circumstances may syringes be put with ordinary waste.

Reporting of Injuries and Dangerous Occurrences
Any incident that occurs in the Hall and results in potential or actual injury must be reported to the Reception, where an incident form will be completed. This will be followed up by the Bursar’s Office.

General Health and WelfareThe Hall seeks to provide an initial support structure for residents based around the Senior Members, vice-Wardens and Warden. Residents are welcome to approach anyone in this team, or a member of Hall staff. Residents are also encouraged to report genuine health and welfare concerns that they may have about another resident. These will be treated in confidence.Other sources of support are available through health centres, college and student union Welfare Officers, the college chaplains, independent counselling services and help lines. The Warden’s team may be able to assist with further information.
