Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.
- Howard Zinn
Volunteering is a great way to make a positive difference and connect with the local community. It is also a good opportunity to develop new skills and build up your resume.
Things to think about before volunteering
If you are not sure what sort of volunteering you would like to do, you have never volunteered before or just don’t know where to start, it might be helpful to think about the following:
What are cause/s are you passionate about?
What skills can you offer to an organisation
What skills would you like to gain from volunteering?
What do you want to gain from volunteering?
How much time can you commit to volunteering?
Where to volunteer
There are plenty of volunteering opportunities in Bloomsbury and the wider London community.
International Hall actively supports Beanstalk, a national charity that supports volunteers to provide one-to-one literacy support for primary school children. Literacy is an essential learning tool that provides the basis for further education and it is also a key life skill.
There are also plenty of other volunteering opportunities in London which can be found through the following websites:
Team London – the Mayor of London’s programme for volunteering:
Charity Job – a recruitment website for both volunteer and paid jobs:
Do-it.org – the UK’s national volunteering database:
United Nations Volunteers – online volunteering for organisations contributing to peace and development:
Volunteer Centre Camden – volunteer opportunities in the Borough of Camden. This Centre also offers one-on-one appointments with a “matchmaker” who will help you find a suitable volunteering opportunity based on your interests and skills.
You can also volunteer at IH. We have a lovely Garden that is open to all our residents. It is a fun community project which would be great to work on together. We would love to have you join in. Interested in writing? Why not contribute a story on your London experience to our IH Blog? In January, the search for our next team of Community Volunteers will begin. Stay tuned.
The Warden's Team is always here to help you.
