I’m 57 years old, I’ve worked in security for more than 10 years, and I’ve worked in international hall for over 5 years. I have two grandchildren—I’m a family man.
Where are you from? What is one special thing about the place you grew up in?
I originate from Southeast London, close to Crystal palace. I grew up there and had my schooling there. My origins are from Turkey, but my parents originate from Cyprus. My grandfather got injured in the war, and my father came over to London because of him. My father’s ambition was to be a successful businessmen and that is why he stayed here. He was working almost 24/7. His first ambition was to open his own first restaurant in the West end, and he eventually did: he called them the “wimpy bars”, kind of like McDonalds, specialized in burgers. He had 8 of them. He decided then to go into buying and selling property, made lots of money up to the age of 70, and now he’s retired. Everything turned out just the way he wanted.
What is your favourite holiday and why?
I haven’t taken a holiday since 2005. I used to go every year when I first got married to Malta because my ex-wife was Maltese and her family was Maltese. They had their own property there, so we used to stay there with our kids. I have two boys, one is 30, and one is 29. The older one is a professional boxer. I got brought up in a boxing family too. I used to box too. Now I can only handle the coaching, not the punching. Laughs.
What do you wish you had more time for?
I wish I had more time for grandchildren which I don’t see enough of. While they are home I’m working, and during the day they’re at school. The oldest one is 8 years old girl, and the youngest is 3. I also take care of my disabled mother.
What is the one food you can eat every day and never get bored of?
Rice is my favorite!
What are you interested in that most people aren’t or haven’t heard of?
As I originate from a boxing family, boxing is my number one sport. I cannot miss a night of not watching boxing.
What is the most interesting place you’ve been to?
I think it’s Malta because there is a lot history from way back during the Spanish invasion. I went to Valetta, which I really enjoyed as well. I really like history and knowing how and where countries and people originated.
What is an exciting thing coming up in the near future that you’re looking forward to?
Having his own security company! I had it before, but I lost it, so before I get too old to defend myself, this is the plan I am looking forward to.
What is one hidden talent that you have or that you wish you had?
I used to play the drums. I really like music: I used to be in a band, it was called Gang. I can imagine being a violinist too. Laughs.
What is the best thing about working in IH?
Talking to the residents and looking out at them so they can be safe and sound. I look at you guys as my own. I want to make sure that you are comfortable to come and speak to us and express your problems, but also protect you and shield you from any kind of danger. I treat you guys like I would treat my own children.
